Australia 1 dollar 2011 - Census & Joan Sutherland

New commemoratives:

100 Years of Australian Census

Australia has come a long way since the first nationally coordinated Census in 1911. At that time Australia was a young growing nation with a blossoming identity influenced by different cultures and preferences. The first Census data played an important role in helping to shape Australia by providing decision makers with accurate information to help plan for the future.

Inspirational Australians: Joan Sutherland

Dame Joan Alston Sutherland (7 November 1926 - 10 October 2010) was an Australian dramatic coloratura soprano, one of the most remarkable female opera singers of the 20th century. She was dubbed La Stupenda by a La Fenice audience in 1960 after a performance of the title role in Handel's Alcina. She possessed a voice of beauty and power, combining extraordinary agility, accurate intonation, supremely pinpoint staccatos, a splendid trill and a tremendous upper register. Her friend Luciano Pavarotti once called her the "Voice of the Century". Montserrat Caballé described the Australian's voice as being like "heaven".
