Bal Gangadhar Tilak was a scholar, mathematician, philosopher, and militant nationalist who helped lay the foundation for India's independence. He founded and served as president of the Indian Home Rule League and, in 1916, concluded the Lucknow Pact with Mohammed Ali Jinnah, which provided for Hindu-Muslim unity in the struggle for independence.

  1. The Tilak coins was initially issued with word 'Tilak Ji' in hindi. At this, the followers of Tilak took offence. These coins were later recalled. The fresh coins were issued with word 'Tilak'.
